Frequently asked questions
How is WPM calculated?
Net WPM counts only correctly typed characters. Every five characters count as one word, and the total is divided by the minutes you typed. Raw WPM counts everything you typed, including mistakes.
How is accuracy worked out?
Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that matched the text. If you fix a mistake with Backspace, the wrong keystroke still counts against your accuracy.
Is the typing test free and private?
Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs entirely in your browser. Your text and results are not sent anywhere. Personal bests are saved only on this device, and you can erase them with the Clear saved scores button.
Can I practise with my own text?
Yes. Choose Custom text, paste or type at least 20 characters, and start. Smart quotes and long dashes are swapped for keys found on a standard keyboard so the text can be typed.
Why is pasting disabled in the typing box?
Pasting would make the result meaningless, so the box only accepts characters you type.
What is a good typing speed?
It depends on your goal. Many people type at around 40 words per minute, and 60 or more is comfortable for most office work. Aim to be accurate first and let speed build with practice.
